2008/09/01 facing gustav's eye

saturday at 6 am matt and me started our evacuation trip to port allen by baton rouge to beat both traffic and gustav. we were relaxed, had fun and enjoyed the great view of baton rouge.

the same night matt, larry [one of matt’s closest friends] and me went out to play pool and have a few beers. chillin’. we spent the whole sunday with matt’s family, actually had a great day, rain and wind started that night.

monday morning we woke up still with electricity, matt was like ‘oh no, we missed the storm.. what a shame!’. we checked the tv and learned that gustav had turned at the last minute to leave new orleans alone and head towards us rapidly.

cindy’s room was the one with the greatest view wherefore we decided to hang out and watch gustav from there. it was exciting..

this tree fell

..at least we were not scared. i just had finished texting everyone ‘gustav is right over us and we’re almost having fun’ when all of a sudden *wham* *crash* *boom* the roof came off. i remember hearing matt yell ‘get down in our room, NOW!’ packing kid [larry’s son], dog and computers [still the right priorities..] and heading towards our room.

as matt constantly told us to stay away from the window, pieces of roof flew over us and people were running outside screaming ‘get back in the rooms!!’ i didn’t feel too comfortable. the fact that our bathroom started leaking and we were ‘under water’ pretty quickly helped me to break down, too.

anyway, after one hour and a half it was over and we could look at the damage gustav had caused:

that's the motel we stayed in.. well chosen, don't you think?!

as the roof had come off water dropped into our room [on the ground floor], lil' larry tried to improve the situation.

‘worst storm that had ever hit baton rouge parish’ as the eye had directly hit, and we were in the middle of it [just looking for some sympathy here..]. it was exciting and i paid my dues, that’s for sure.

street signs went, too

the good thing about gustav is that he not only missed new orleans and just caused minor damage, but also did he make me bond well with matt’s family [as we’re still hanging out at matt’s brother mike without electricity, i.e. no air condition]. matt himself was [and still is] always there for me, took [and still takes] care and made me not regret once that i had come to new orleans and face gustav, basically because of him. we supported each other well through the whole time and are well prepared for any major crisis situation that might come up.

anyway, for the next storm we go to canada.
