2010/03/29 the grand tour

on our last day matt & i were all by ourselves, since romy & sebi both had to work.

after a quick stop at the speicherstadt,

..where we couldn't get tickets for the world's largest model train, we went back..

..to the fish restaurant at the schanze.

we lucked out twice, because the famous pastry shop 'herr max' had a spare table for us.

the cakes were simply indescribable!!

well rested we rode uptown to the huge cemetery in ohlsdorf,

..which is so large that two bus lines run through it. we grabbed one and had ourselves a little tour to rest our feet.

after that we went back downtown.. we did not really know where to get off the subway, therefore we had quite a hike from the binnenalster..

..to the jungfernstieg.

we continued walking further into the city and accidentally bumped into the church st. nikolai [or rather what is left of it]

..we purchased tickets to get on top and caught a great view of the city.

by running over some bridges in the middle of the city..

..we discovered the cutest spot of the city.. 'am michel'.

matt somehow managed to guide us through there so that we ended up at the port again, where we enjoyed the sunset..
..and finally got tickets for the model train.

we spent some hours in there, therefore enjoyed the port by night..

.. and basically fell back home to bed.

2010/03/28 oevelgönne and other elb-ish stuff

on day no. 3 romy & sebi showed us the port of hamburg, which is the second largest in europe. we started at the speicherstadt, an old beautiful area..

..that had been pimped by some famous architects so that now it is an extremely trendy and expensive place to live in..

the condos look cool, but not only are they slightly overpriced, but also is the infrastructure really bad, wherefore living there is more a status than a practical thing.

the public transport along the elbe is.. a boat *well, duh*. so rather than buying expensive tickets for a tour, we just hopped on for free..

..saw the port as well..

..and exited at the elbstrand, a pretty beach, where they have a lot of parties in summer.

the area around the elbstrand is named oevelgönne and kinda reminded us of new orleans..

..except that it was a little hillier.

again, it started raining in the evening, wherefore we just quickly passed some church and the went back home again.
