2009/11/02 le grand final

our last day consisted of a series of incredibly fortunate and cool events.
we got up early to acquire standby tickets for an nbc late night show. this idea had been born the day before on our tour through the studios.. and seemed to be quite a nice idea.
since we were already there, we got in line for the top of the rock - an elevator ride to the roof of the rockefeller center to overlook manhattan by day [where we finally managed to take a few pictures from us].

when we came back down matt had the - at the first glance crazy - idea to take a subway to roosevelt island, just to look at the new york skyline again. when we arrived we discovered that they had a public cable car [the roosevelt island tramway] transporting people back and forth.. with an awesome view over the city. most certainly we had to hop on!

again, back on the ground we walked along 6th avenue towards the upper eastside to visit the famous solomon guggenheim museum. it was packed, wherefore we simply enjoyed the architecture [and not the exhibitions].

it turned out to be a rather qucik experience, so that we continued lingering along central park..

..towards the metropolitan museum of art ['the met']. we saw even less of this one.

'nevermind', we thought and took a cab downtown, for another museum: the museum of sex. it was so lame that we did not even care to take pictures. however, the cab ride along 5th avenue was amazing!

after the museum-related disappointment we were right on time to go back to the nbc studios.. since we had tickets for the jimmy fallon late night show!

the show is a mixture between harald schmidt and willkommen österreich; i.e. quite fun.

but not only that the jokes were good and the guests famous [e.g. taylor swift], his studio band is the best live band ever: the wonderful wonderful roots!

the experience of being in the audience of a tv-show was amazing itself.. but seeing the roots live.. undescribable. they are incredible!

later that night we met up with brynne and her boyfriend to have our last dinner in nyc. brynne had picked another cool place calles moto, where - as we were told by and african-american lady - 'all them white folks go'. atmosphere was bohemian, food was good.. yet i was sick another time. nevermind, it was fine!

to sum it all up, this was our new york city!

times square, of which we still don't know, whether it is a pedestrian zone or not..

the subway, which confused us day by day, but still brought us everywhere we wanted to go..

the stunning architecture with its unique combination of old and new, small and huge..

the crazy traffic with all its jams and frustrated drivers [who are hilarious to observe]..

the beautiful, beautiful central park..

the cool cafés, bars and restaurants..

some bewildering contradictions..

trees with plastic [!] ribbons to save the environment,

amish markets which seemed quite modern,

or signs that only tourists would recognize.

and the spirit to simply live your dream!

new york, i love you!

since numerous people recommended to go see chinatown, we did so; indeed, it was quite an experience. a whole bunch of cheap crap on every corner and millions of invasive chinese women offering "bags, rolex, dvd dvd dvd..".

considering my circumstances and my current incapability of coping with stress, we decided to have a quick - incredibly cheap - bite and escape this sensory overload.

we went back downtown, passing city hall [where jefferson supporters protested against the current mayor bloomberg]..

..the courthouse and the financial district.

once again, we passed ground zero and were able to catch a few glimpses of the construction site. although 09/11 happened over 8 years ago, this place still gives you [or at least gave me] the chills.

after a little nap at home, we went back to manhattan to see the city by night.. from the top of the empire state building.

later on we lingered along 5th avenue..

..to quickly stop by at bloomingdale's, where i could acquire my very first 'little brown bag'.

we had dinner at junior's in brooklyn, the place where the sell the best cheesecake in the world.. an yeah, they do!
